In April 2025, Biogrow Protec celebrated its first melon harvest, with a crop of deliciously sweet and juicy musk melons. The decision to diversify our tomato and bell pepper plantings by adding this premium crop, had multiple benefits: it gave students of our soilless introductory training course an opportunity to learn about melon nutrition, irrigation, and crop husbandry techniques; offered our existing Biogrow Substrate clients the chance to learn more about a short-term premium crop that can fit well into annual planting schedules; and lastly, gave our fresh produce clients a high quality alternative to the field-only melon production currently standard in the region.
We were fortunate to receive seed from the pre-commercial Rijjk Zwann Fujisawa variety, which as a premium product, is less suited for traditional field cultivation, but thrives when grown in polyhouses using cocopeat.
Branded with our ‘Ready Ripe’ sticker, the fruits have proved very popular with premium retail buyers, and all of our teams!
